Pellet Stove Pellets: Today's Green Fuel
Just
what is “pellets” and where do they come from and what are they made from? Are they efficient? Just what will I be burning in my pellet stove?
Not to worry. Pellet fuel is a renewable, clean burning
fuel that is cost efficient and used throughout
North America. It is a bimass product generally made up of wood waste that has been recycled.
There are almost 800,000 homes in America that are
using pellet fuel in freestanding stoves or inserts or even in furnaces. North American pellets are produced in factories in Canada, and the
United States. You can find wood pellets at nurseries, fireplace dealers, building supply dealers, feed and garden supply merchants as well as
some department stores.
When you use pellet fuel you are diverting millions of
tons of waste from the landfills and converting it to energy. According to data compiled by The Pellet Fuels Institute, pellets are a
limitless fuel source.
A characteristic of the pellet stove pellets is that
they are considered by many environmentalists to be “C02 neutral”. What this means in a nutshell is that while they do produce C02 when
burning they are made fro parts of a tree that once lived on C02 so the two factors cancel each other out.
The cost o burn these wood pellets is good also. The
average family needs about 3 tons of the pellets to heat their home each year or about $600. Compare this to the cost of heating with oil or
gas and you will see the difference is very notable.
So pellet stoves and burning wood pellets are catching
on in the US. With the high cost of energy it is easy to see why. This a wise way to save money and to contribute to the “green” world we live
in.
