Pellet Stove Pipe Installation- Easy or Not?

Pellet stove pipes, also known as Class L chimneys, are easy enough to find in your local hardware store or even Home Depot. But as a do-it-yourselfer, is pellet stove pipe installation a good idea or better left for trained professionals?

Installing a pellet stove pipe is actually a relatively easy process for someone with very little diy experience. The key here is to know exactly what your up against before installing. It is not just a simple matter of the pipe itself. Your first task is to know exactly where you want to place the stove within your home. Obviously, you want to place the stove in a room you wish to heat. If at all possible it is best to center the stove in the largest room you want to heat. This allows the pellet stove to evenly heat the room, saving you fuel expense and the discomfort of drafty areas.

Another thing to consider is whether or not you already have a hearth in place. If you do not, it is strongly suggested that you follow the manufacturer's recomendations so that you properly protect your flooring and most importantly, protect your home from an accidental fire! Hot embers can easily damage flooring and are likely to start a fire if not contained properly.

Some manufacturers imply that directly venting your pellet stove to the outside is okay, but professionals feel this is a bad idea. No matter how well you vent directly to the outside, you will cause damage to the exterior. At the same time, low venting can be very dangerous. Pets, kids and adults alike stand the chance of walking past the hot vent and developing serious burns.

When looking for a pellet stove pipe, you must also consider how long the pipe should be. This can be as simple as measuring the distance from your pellet stove to the area where you plan to vent, allowing excess room for the distance above the ceiling and out into the open. Pellet stove pipes have stainless steel interiors with a galvanized, aluminum exterior. These pipes can range anywhere from one to five feet long.

Installing a pellet stove pipe is really not as difficult as it sounds, but many feel that a professional installation is a much easier and safer way to go. Installation can run as high as $600 or more, but generally come with a guarantee. This price for peace of mind is well worth it. When in doubt, have a professional install your pellet stove pipe!
